Intercon – that was!
Never again can Harrogate be accused of lagging behind in the field of good class eating places where one can dine and dance in luxurious surroundings without having to pay too luxurious a price. The success of “Countdown” proved that, and now from the same stable, comes the spanking new “Intercon” at Coptall Tower ( Station Building ), opened Saturday, May 9, 1970 .
A vast place of carpeted elegance, swinging décor, red leather seating, soft lights and the latest in amplified music which will be the first of its kind ever to be installed in the town, or for that matter in the country – these are just a few odd items in a dance-diner bursting with new ideas. Even the curtains, a brand new, up-to-the minute Parisians design straight from the mill are a guaranteed knock-out, to say nothing of the saucily gay murals which adorn the walls.
Before entering the Intercon you had to pass “Joe D” at the entrance, if you made it pass Joe it was a relief, you were set for a night of “discovery.” After walking up the stairs you entered the main area of the Intercon through the double doors, in front of you was the d j console the “heart beat of the disco diner.” To the right of the dj console was the stage.
In front of the console was the largest of the raised wooden dance floors. To the left of the console was a stairs leading to the restaurant, chicken and chips in a basket was the in thing to eat at the time.
Underneath the restaurant was a long dance floor running down one side with a walk way about a third of the width. At the end of the tunnel this area opened into the bars. Uniformed staff served the patrons their favorite drinks.
The Intercon had the latest sound equipment and automatic controls for the lighting system. One of the innovations introduced was close circuit TV, this was quite a novelty. Opening times was 8.30pm - 2am. Entrance fee was dependant on the night and if there was a special event on and there were many!
