POLL WINNERS – A HIT FOR THE ‘BOSS' DJ

Disc jockeys swept the board for votes in Harrogate's first ever Pop Poll introduced on this page at the beginning of last month and scoring most votes in the D J category and overall top votes throughout the six categories in the poll was Kingsley Allison Harrogate Intercon's Jamaican ‘Boss' DJ.

Simon Peters who is well known for his ‘Golden Oldies' spot also at the Intercon made second place in the DJ category. Other votes in this section went to Sounds Seventies DJ Jimmy James and another Intercon DJ Marc Roberts.

We received a large number of votes for Jimmy James and several for Simon Peters but unfortunately we had to disqualify those in fairness to those readers who sent in their votes within the time limit set for the poll.

Other Sections

In other sections voting was substantially lower and there were no votes at all in the category for best performance during the last 12 months. ‘Haze', the Harrogate group and the Knaresborough group ‘F Troop' tied for first place in the best group category. ‘Haze' guitarist, John Knowles and ‘F Troop' drummer Andrew Rathwell tied for first place in the ‘best musician' category, Dave Hope of ‘Haze' was voted best singer, and Richard Harrison a student at Harrogate High School was voted best song-writer.

Voting in detail in each category went:

Best DJ

Kingsley Allison - 101 votes

Simon Peters - 54 votes

Jimmy James – 2 votes

Marc Roberts – 1 vote

Best Group

Haze – 1 vote F Troop – 1 vote

Best Musician

Guitarist John Knowles – 1 vote

Drummer Andrew Rathwell – 1 vote

Best Singer

Dave Hope – 1 vote Best Songwriter Richard Harrison – 1 vote

In our opinion low voting in the ‘live' music sections does not indicate a lack of quality but simply a lack of publicity. With so few local bookings now available the local musicians are finding it difficult to make their names known.

We would like to help more people to get to know their local musicians by writing about them on this page. But we can only do this is the musicians or their friends will contact us by writing to Youth Page, Harrogate Herald, Montpellier Parade or by telephoning Harrogate 4001 and asking for a Youth Page reporter.

As this was the first Pop Poll in Harrogate we would also be pleased to have your comments about the Poll. Was it a good idea? Should we continue to hold the Poll in coming years?
